Is our love for these squash-faced dogs harming them?
-Squash faced dogs have flat noses, baby-like faces with large, round eyes.
-They are also known as brachycephalic dogs.
-The British Veterinary Association has launched #breedtobreathe, a campaign made to focus on the issues surrounding brachycephalic dogs.
Dog lovers were informed that squash-faced or brachycephalic dogs like French bulldogs and pugs were found to have certain health problems. Because of prioritizing appearance over health and selective breeding, these dogs are prone to eye and skin disorders and difficulties in breathing.
Social media, advertising, and celebrity ownership are thought to be the reasons for the increase in these dogs. Big brands have started to avoid using these dogs for promotional purposes.
Instead, they are now raising awareness of these health problems and let them understand that these dogs are struggling as though they are “ being smothered with a pillow every day”.
