Environment Secretary Michael Gove announced during the last week of August that a ban will issued in the UK for electric shock collars for cats and dogs. Some people noted that this seemed like a complete reversal from the departments stand earlier in the year.

In February, a letter from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) stated that the evidence to support a ban was insufficient. It’s an issue that has sparked quite a debate among dog owners.

Some believe a system of positive rewards should be used to train pets and the electric shocks can worsen the animal’s behaviour. Others continue to say that the research conducted shows there’s insufficient evidence to conclude that these collars are harming pets.
