The German Shepherd is a fairly large sized dog whose origin has been traced to Germany in 1899. In the past, German Shepherds were considered to be working dogs due to their size, strength, intelligence, obedience and trainability.
They were used to herd sheep (hence its name) for a long time in the past. However, due to their really attractive qualities, they have become the best companion for humans with disabilities.
They have also proven to be very useful to the police and military as search and rescue dogs and other roles. In America, the German shepherd is the second most frequently registered dog breed.
These beautiful dogs usually live for about 9-13 years with a litter size of 4-9 puppies.
Their most appealing quality is definitely their intelligence and this is one of the major reason why they were bred in the past. They are incredibly sensitive, with good cognitive skills and are easy to train really quickly.
