Who would’ve thought that a boy scout could raise almost $4,000 to buy a bulletproof vest for the only K9 unit of their local sheriff’s department?
-Joshua Hummer first met the K9 dog when Deputy Glidden brought him into one of their boy scout meetings.
-Hummer was inspired by Rocko’s heroic service and wanted to do something to ensure the dog was protected from harm.
-He decided to start a fundraiser to buy a bulletproof vest for Rocko.
Joshua Hummer decided to organize an event for his Eagle Scout project with his fellow members in Troop 60. They set up a BBQ lunch at the American Legion in Savannah.
Their target was to hit $2000 so they can purchase the vest but the total amount they raised was actually almost double that. Close to 280 people came to the event and supported their cause.
K9 units are usually placed in a lot of danger in their line of work and may even be shot or stabbed fatally. Officer Glidden and the Sheriff’s department were grateful for the initiative that the boys had and the community’s warm response.
